Long Distance

This morning,
I talked to my sister
about tattoos and growing older
about men who drink and worse
and the O'Neill women
who always seemed to find them
"Good Catholic girls don't leave"
we laughed and said

the sadness was there
swirled through the conversation
like cream in bitter coffee
with me on one side of a failure
and you on the other

I shouldn't have been surprised
when she said
it was me who needed to change.
how that would fix things
but I was

part of it makes sense
she's spent twenty years
trying to figure out what went wrong
and still blames herself
And as the "lucky" child,
if she only knew,
I've always been ungrateful,
hard to put up with.

She's right, I suppose,
and I guess
the only person I can change
is me.
It's harder than it sounds.

We talked some more
about books we love,
and family we miss.
She thanked me for the flowers.
"love you more" she said
"no you don't" I laughed
I hung up the phone
and cried.

Congratulations to BonnieJean for her poem "Long Distance" She is the newest DrunkenIrishPoet of the month. This poem really struck a chord for me and I thought was the best poem of the month by far and there were some good ones. Let's keep it up and make September even better.I was going to pick Libby this month because that's my daughter's name. But that wouldn't be fair. Sorry Libby. Sorry I haven't posted on here for a while, I've been busy. Busy getting drunk. Seriously, when I made this site I was self taught and just learning. I didn't automate this part and I'm too lazy to do it now. Plus I want it to show up in the search engines and if I put it in a database it won't. So I've made it way to complicated to post while drunk.

You people are killing me. There are nine poems on the board for the month of July. If this keeps up that means I will have to drink twenty two days this month. More if you count the multiple poems in one day. There is only so long I can keep this up. So let's hope for a good week and a better month in August. P.S. I was only kidding, I can keep this up for a long time.

Haven't posted in a while. I spent a week in the psych ward. So I obviously couldn't keep up the drunken Irish protest in there. I couldn't drink yesterday, I was hungover on Southern Comfort. Ugh! So I got a free one. I'll make up for it today though. Unless one of you decides to put your poem in public. So dust off that notebook, search that hard drive and come up with a real gem for me.

Thank goodness for a new poem yesterday. I had been down so long it started looking like up to me. It was nice to get a new poem but that's only one for the month of July. At this rate my liver will be gone by August. I know there's some closet poets out there sitting on the fence. I say jump into my yard with both feet and post a poem. Don't keep it to yourself. Share it with the world.

Awesome, a new poem. I'm going to enjoy my day off from drinking and stay up late to watch the Red Sox game. Maybe I'll even remember the score in the morning. The only drawback is they're playing on the west coast so it will cut into my Adult Swim time and I'll have to watch Chris Matthews. I hate him. I suppose it's time to get caught up on the news. I haven't posted in a while because I was heartbroken over the Celtics loss. Oh well, football season is just around the corner. Keep up the good work, it's almost time for a new poet of the month.

Well, looks like I get to drink during the Celtics game. No poems today. I got a few days off from drinking last week. That's always good but it looks like I have to get back on that horse. Have to hurry up the games about to start.Keep those poems coming.

It's seven thirty and I'm getting primed for the Celtics game at eight. You know what that means. Yes sir! The drunken irish protest is back on. I had a few days to recover and get my head on straight. But it's crooked again. You know the deal, everyday there's no poem on the board I get drunk. So if you feel bad for me or would like to give me a rest just sign up and post a poem. It's that easy.

I screwed up and didn't actually check the board on Tuesday or Wednesday and drank anyway. What a waste of a hangover. But my old friend ShadowCatamount came through for me. I'm going to take the next two days to rest up my liver. I think I deserve it. Ciao!
